Review: SWAG SCT13 MAX Off-Road Hybrid Camper

Gary Tischer — 30 June 2022
Small doesn’t mean you have to leave it at home. The SCT13 MAX has so much included you’ll be surprised how big it feels.

A 13ft hybrid shouldn’t have all the features that the SCT13 MAX does. For a quick roadside overnight you don’t even have to put the roof up as you can sit on the bed with the roof down. I still probably would put the roof up though as it is so easy. And in many ways, easy is a great descriptor of the SCT13 Max. Plenty of great features with ease of use.

The Build

The body construction is primarily German engineered composite sandwich panel. This has a numerous benefits including its insulation properties keeping it cool in summer and warm in winter. Composite panel is also lighter and less prone to water or dust ingress than other materials.

The body of the SWAG SCT13 is fixed on a 6 inch hot dipped galvanised chassis to keep everything strong and safe as travel to your favourite destination. To soften the ride, suspension is Aussie proven heavy duty independent trailing arm suspension combined with Monroe HD off road shocks. This combination has showed it’s made to last across the vast distances of outback Australia.

On top of the camper are mounted 300w of solar panels to charge the 300ah of batteries. A Truma gas hot water system will keep you happy with hot showers out of the 200L of fresh water on board with a huge 120L grey water tank so you can stay remote in national parks.

Livability

This is a hybrid camper with the internal space dedicated to relaxing while on the road. The north/south king size bed has plenty of space to spread out and enjoying the outside views even when lying in bed through the two large windows on either side. These plus the rest of the screened windows provide plenty of light and fresh air to keep you cool on the hottest of days.

When wanting to sit at a table the end of the mattress is able to be folded up to reveal one of sides of the L shaped lounge. The other side of the lounge and table can still be used even if someone is in bed.

There is a good sized internal ensuite which is great for those not wanting to rough it while enjoying the outdoors. The toilet is a Thetford swivel toilet which helps maximise the space when showering. Above the ensuite is a vent/skylight so hot, moist air can escape outside reducing the amount of moisture inside the camper.

The inside of the SCT13 MAX has a good amount of space for yourself and your gear in loads of storage hatches. I would be happy to spend plenty of time travelling and living out of this compact yet spacious hybrid.

A Kitchen for the Gourmet

The L shaped kitchen of the SWAG SCT13 MAX is designed with plenty of space for preparation, cooking and storage which will make using this kitchen a pleasure. The 75lt dual zone fridge is easily accessible via a pull-out slide. This can be accessed for morning tea stops when on the road and when at camp cooking up a gourmet meal.

The four burner fully plumbed gas hob means you can have four pots on the go at once. A slide out drawer under the hob gives access to all the cutlery you would need and a stainless steel preparation area next to the stove gives plenty of space there as well. This is an extremely well appointed kitchen which rivals much bigger vans.

The Bottom Line

Would I like to spend time with the SCT13 MAX? Absolutely. It is light with plenty of space and storage. It is easy to tow and easy to set up. There is certainly plenty to like in SWAG SCT 13 MAX.
