Westernport Caravans has introduced a wheelchair-friendly camper to its 2016 Kakadu line-up, with a hydraulic-operated roof and bathroom facilities delivered across the range.

The bedroom shifts over the a-frame to allow for an island bed.

The Chameleon, which is one of three Kakadu-branded models, comes with a wider door, ramp and a bigger en suite to provide travellers who are chair-bound the freedom to camp out bush in a compact rig that’s fully self-contained.

"Many of our clients confined to a chair are limited to vehicles with lower profiles, which tend not to have high towing capacities," said Chris Shambrook, general manager for Westernport Caravans.

Ease of use across the range is assured thanks to the camper’s new remote-controlled hydraulic roof lift that utilises a 1.2t-rated hydraulic ram in each corner. The ram-drive system promises greater reliability and easier access for trackside repairs plus smoother operation for safe cartage of heavy accessories like an air-conditioning unit, rooftop panels or a tinny.

Setting up the bedroom with island bed is a matter of pushing a button to reveal a fold-up innerspring mattress that doubles as a sofa during the day. (A fixed mattress is also available).

"Like the roof, the bedroom is hydraulically-operated and slides out on heavy duty tracks," Mr Shambrook explained. Other significant comforts include internal access to a separate shower and toilet, microwave, and a rolled benchtops and high gloss cabinetry.

All models come standard with two 4.5kg gas cylinders, two 110Ah batteries and two 60L tanks, three-way fridge, a sink and separate cooktop with the offroad-ready Scorpion featuring a DO35 coupling and 2.5t-rated coil-spring suspension with a 900kg for that rooftop tinny.

A compressor fridge, solar panels, lithium batteries, a 90L tank and an instantaneous hot water service are also available as options.

"We can even customise your camper with different decals and rims," he said.
